Identify the field before you paste

A username usually identifies an account, while a display name is the label people see. Apps can use different words for these fields: TikTok calls its visible name a nickname. Do not assume a decorative name that looks good in a preview is allowed as an account handle.

Check the app's own rules

Discord uses unique lowercase usernames with stricter character rules, while display names can contain spaces and additional characters. TikTok distinguishes its username from its visible nickname; changing the username also changes the profile link. Roblox allows shared display names, but its username remains the unique account identifier.

Keep a plain fallback

Check how others will find you

After saving, inspect the profile and every account link you control. TikTok documents that a username change also changes the profile link. Update the link in other bios or pages and open it to verify the destination. Read the new spelling aloud if its word boundaries are hard to recognize.
