Identify the field before you paste
A username usually identifies an account, while a display name is the label people see. Apps can use different words for these fields: TikTok calls its visible name a nickname. Do not assume a decorative name that looks good in a preview is allowed as an account handle.
Look for the field label in the account settings. If you are editing a profile link or the name used to find the account, treat the change more carefully than a visual label.

Check the app's own rules
Discord distinguishes unique usernames from display names and permits more expressive formatting in display names. TikTok distinguishes a username from a nickname, and changing the username changes the profile link. Roblox notes that multiple people can have the same display name.

Keep a plain fallback
Start with a short, readable name in ordinary letters. Save a more decorative version for a field that accepts it. If a handle is taken, change a meaningful word or add a short descriptive ending instead of piling on random digits.

Coordinate a matching pair
For two accounts, check both names before either person changes theirs. The slash on a matching-name card separates the two suggestions; use only one half in each account.
If one name is unavailable, adapt the same part of both names so they still feel connected.

Check how others will find you
After saving, inspect your profile and any links you share. If the app changes the account URL when you change a handle, update your linked profiles as well. Ask a friend to read the new name aloud if the spelling is hard to recognize.
